A PAIR OF LEAF-SHAPED PLATES

Early 20th century h.: 11 cm
l: 30 cm

Two almost identical leaf-shaped plates with ring handles. Red earthenware with a sporadically applied white slip, splashes of green and purple paint, and a transparent, colourless glaze. The clearly delineated veins of the leaf run over each inner surface, while the handle is joined to the body by a flower rosette in relief with a pair of leaves coming out of it. Engraved in handwriting on the oval, unglazed base is the phrase: "Suverio Guerriera Dardanelli Turchia D'Asia" (Souvenir of Gallipoli, Turkey).
